Botox has been approved by the FDA as a safe, successful treatment for many different causes of pain. While best known for the ability to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, Botox is also used to treat conditions that affect many body functions. Examples include:
- Repetitive neck spasms
- Chronic headaches and migraines
- Arthritis- Botox has been shown to help shoulder, knee, and hip pain caused by osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis (usually not covered by insurance)
- Muscle contractures and neurologic conditions that cause the muscles to involuntarily contract
Botox injections work by blocking chemical signals that cause muscles to contract. Patients may receive one or more injections of Botox depending on severity of pain and location of pain. The injections can prevent or reduce pain and depending on the problem being treated, the effect can last from three to twelve months. Botox injections are done in the doctor’s office and you can resume normal daily activity after the procedure.
