Epidural Steroid

Lumbar, Thoracic, Cervical Epidurals

Epidural steroid injections (ESI) are a popular method for treating inflammation and pain in the spine. Low back pain that affects the legs and neck pain that affects the arms are common reasons for receiving epidural steroid injections.

When steroids are injected into the epidural space, anti-inflammatory medication that can decrease pain and improve physical function are delivered directly to the affected nerves. Steroids do not fix the cause of the pain, but offer relief from the pain, which can increase quality of life and improve the ability for a patient to perform day to day tasks. By decreasing inflammation and pain, steroids make the road to recovery less bumpy.

Epidural steroid injections are procedures performed by inserting a thin needle into the area using x-ray guidance and contrast dye to confirm the medication is delivered to the correct area. Patients generally obtain relief from their pain within 2 to 5 days.
